Elliott Horch, assistant professor of physics at University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, will speak on “New Opportunities for Astrophysics with Binary Stars” noon today in Hugel Science Center room 205.

Sponsored by Physics Club, the free event is open to the campus. Pizza will be provided.

Horch has studied binary stars to determine the precise orbits of stars, which in turn reveals the masses of these systems. Part of his work involves three fine guidance sensors on the Hubble Space Telescope.

After earning degrees at University of Chicago and Stanford, Horch held a research position at the Yale University Department of Astronomy and both research and teaching positions at the Center for Imaging Science at Rochester Institute of Technology. He came to UMass-Dartmouth in September 2002.
