Members of the student chapter of the American Chemical Society taught local elementary school students about “Earth’s Atmosphere and Beyond!” for National Chemistry Week in October.
Chemistry majors Kevin Barry ’05 (North Haven, Conn.) and Stacey Cromer ’05 (Dillsburg, Pa.) and biochemistry majors Alison Campbell ’04 (West Chester, Pa.) and Michelle Ferguson ’04 (Wallingford, Conn.) visited first-graders at Forks Elementary School. The presentations featured demonstrations of physical changes by boiling liquid nitrogen and chemical changes by making “slime.”
Lafayette students also will visit fourth-graders in November and second-graders in the spring to coordinate their demonstrations with the children’s science curriculum. The students will be accompanied by ACS chapter adviser William Miles, associate professor of chemistry.
The American Chemical Society selected the “Earth’s Atmosphere and Beyond!” theme to celebrate the 100th anniversary of flight.
Future ACS chapter events this semester include a research symposium with chemistry faculty and a talk by Charles Nutaitis, associate professor of chemistry.
The chapter received an honorable mention award in March at the 225th American Chemical Society National Meeting in New Orleans, and has been featured in Chemical & Engineering News and in Chemistry, the official ACS newsmagazine and Student Affiliates publication, respectively. Every year, approximately 950 student chapters submit a report of activities to ACS. Lafayette was one of only 71 schools to receive an honorable mention.
