The new student chapter of Engineers Without Borders is holding a hands-on workshop today that will focus on the concept of sustainability.

Led by civil engineering majors Matt Verbyla ’06 (Unionville, Conn.) and Fidel Maltez ’05 (Hialeah, Fla.), the event will be held in Jacqua Auditorium, Hugel Science Center room 103. Free lunch will be provided.

The workshop will explore sustainability from different perspectives in order to define the concept in a way that incorporates it in every aspect of life, they note.

“We will look at how industries, governments, communities, and individuals can think sustainably in order to create more balanced interactions with our surroundings, both human and ecological,” says Maltez. “The workshop is meant to be interactive and will provide participants with a forum to discuss sustainability, rather than offer definitions and approaches.”

The student chapter of Engineers Without Borders is planning a trip to Honduras next semester to help provide residents with drinking water.

Earlier this semester, the group sponsored a talk by Richard Herring, executive director of Engineers without Borders-USA.
