A second textbook has been published by Alex M. Greenberg ’79. Craniomaxillofacial Reconstructive and Corrective Bone Surgery: Principles of Internal Fixation Using the AO/ASIF Technique deals with surgical reconstruction of the jaw, face, and skull from the effects of accidents, disease, birth defects, or natural deformities.
Greenberg’s first book addressed facial fractures. The AO/ASIF (Swiss Association for Internal Fixation) technique uses implantable bone plates and screws to replace damaged or missing bone.
“The development of this premium bio-compatible hardware over the past 20 years and its skillful placement have expended the range of surgical procedures integrating hard and soft tissue reconstruction with the use of dental implant prosthetics to encompass many types of repair and reconstruction never before possible,” says Greenberg.
A biology graduate, Greenberg earned his doctor of dental surgery degree in 1983 from Columbia University’s School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He completed residencies at Beth Israel Medical Center and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He now teaches and is on the staff of both institutions, as well as St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital.
In 1994, Greenberg was named an honorary professor of plastic surgery by the Venezuelan government for his contributions to teaching and scholarship at the Hospital Militar “Dr. Carlos Arvelo” in Caracas. He holds patents on 10 surgical devices and techniques.
“Lafayette clearly provided me with a very strong basis in the basic sciences,” says Greenberg, adding that his Spanish minor also proved valuable when he taught five surgical courses in Mexico and Venezuela.
“Essential to the development of my writing skills and later scientific/inventive creativity was the writers workshop I attended with Prof. Fred Closs and Visiting Poet-in-Residence Gerald Stern. I had a wonderful and enriching time in those weekly sessions with Fred and monthly sessions with Gerry,” he says.
