Nolan ‘73 appointed to trade committee U.S. Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans has appointed John Nolan ‘73 to serve on a trade policy advisory committee on ferrous ores and metals. Nolan is vice president of sales and marketing for Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Steel Dynamics. Nolan has been an active lobbyist for the past three years, representing both Steel Dynamics and the interests of the steel industry in Washington. In his new role, Nolan joins other industry representatives to provide the federal government with industry-specific expertise to formulate and conduct trade policy. Nolan joined Steel Dynamics as a startup company in 1994 and assumed his current position in 1998. During his tenure, sales have grown to $864 million. A metallurgical engineering graduate, Nolan credited Professor Leon McGeady, then head of the department of metallurgy, for his decision to go into the steel industry. “By the end of year two, he had convinced me that there was ‘limitless opportunity’ in the world of engineered materials,” he said. “That’s how I found my way into the MET program and why I am doing what I do today, including the trade policy piece. It’s as much about the early choices we make in life as it is about the choices that we make along the way.”
