Alison Berlowitz ’06 (Tenafly, N.J.) gained experience in the world of media advertising through an internship with Katz Media Group in New York.

Berlowitz worked as a sales assistant for Austin Watkins, supervisor of the Broadway team in continental TV sales. Her daily tasks included ordering and revising commercials. She also helped to “solve discrepancies that could arise in the process.”

Although the internship did not directly relate to her government and law major, Berlowitz says that she enjoyed the experience. Katz Media Group, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, is a liaison between advertising agencies and television and radio stations. More than 2,600 stations in radio and 400 stations in television retain its services.

“This experience was valuable because I was responsible for real tasks,” she says, adding that she took the internship to help decide on a career path. “I learned that organization is very important. The sales assistants at Katz are responsible for a great deal of paperwork, and if it is not filed away properly, important contracts can easily become misplaced.”

Over the course of the internship, she was given additional responsibilities to help the continental television department with programming, marketing, and research. The continental television sales department is responsible for medium and smaller television stations.

“I like the academic environment at Lafayette,” she says. “I believe that opportunities for distinctive experiences are present through independent study, EXCEL [Scholars research], and internship opportunities.”

Berlowitz wants to return to New York City after graduating, where she may pursue a career in media and advertising. She plans on interning in the city again this summer to further her career selection.

She is a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Easton through Lafayette’s Landis Community Outreach Center, social chair of Pi Beta Phi sorority, and a campus tour guide. She is a 2002 graduate of Tenafly High School.
