Robert Weiner, Jones Professor of History, is featured in The Long 19th Century: Europe 1789-1917, an 18-hour series, which will soon be available in DVD, video, and audio format. EXCEL Scholar Emily Gould ’05assisted with the project and his research on the Jewish community of Dijon, France.

BYRNES ’05 EXAMINES HOW IMMUNE CELLS FIGHT TUMORS

In an independent study, Tim Byrnes ’05, biology major and biotechnology/bioengineering minor, is investigating the growth of rat breast tumor cells. His advisers are Robert Kurt, assistant professor of biology, and Polly Pierogivanni, associate professor of chemical engineering.

KOZYRA ’05 INVESTIGATES MID-EUROPEAN REGION AND HELPS DESIGN 130-FOOT MURAL

THIRD BOOK BY LUSCOMBE ’60 LOOKS AT NEW JERSEY BANK FAILURE

After retiring from a 37-year career as a Wall Street bond salesman, Paul Luscombe ’60 began writing books. His third book, Howard Powerless: The Rise & Fall of the Howard Savings Bank, describes the collapse of what was once the largest savings bank in New Jersey.

ABEL ’83 BECOMES CEO OF MANHATTAN PHARMACEUTICALS

Douglas Abel ’83, president and CEO of Tarpan Therapeutics, Inc., was appointed chief executive officer of Manhattan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in January when the companies merged. He oversees company operations and the clinical development of Manhattan’s three product candidates.

Prior to Tarpan, he was vice president, dermatology business unit, Biogen Idec., and was director of marketing for BOTOX(R), Allergan Pharmaceuticals. A chemistry graduate, he holds an M.B.A. from Temple University.

The three key products in development are a topical treatment for psoriasis; Oleoyl estrone, for the treatment of obesity; and Propofol Lingual Spray, for pre-procedural sedation.
