ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS FEATURED IN EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA BUSINESS JOURNAL

Members of Engineers Without Borders appeared on the cover of Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journal National Engineers Week supplement Feb. 21. The article focused on the chapter’s project to provide about 1,000 Hondurans with clean drinking water.

BONO ’05 NAMED FOOTBALL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Marquis Scholar and co-captain of the 2004 Patriot League champions, Stephen Bono ’05 has been named Patriot League Football Scholar-Athlete of the year. A civil engineering major, he was a four-year starter at right guard.

PARINI ’70 HONORED WITH LITERATURE AWARD

Author and poet Jay Parini ’70, whose most recent book, The Art of Teaching, was published by Oxford University Press (December 2004), received the 47th annual Sarah Josepha Hale Award for lifetime contribution to New England literature. He is a professor of English at Middlebury (Vt.) College.

REITER’S MATH RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTED BY NATURE

Nature magazine recently featured the work of Cliff Reiter, professor of mathematics, on the mathematical generation of snowflake patterns as the lead story on its web site. He collaborated with Prince Chidyagwai ’05, a double major in mathematics and computer science, to study quasicrystalline structures and analyze their cellular automa growth.

STIFEL ASSISTS POLICY MAKERS IN MADAGASCAR AND KENYA

During spring break, David Stifel, assistant professor of economics and business, will present an analysis of poverty to the Kenyan government in Nairobi. This report is one of two consulting projects conducted for the World Bank. The other involves a household survey for Madagascar.

PAIRINGS SET FOR 2005 PATRIOT LEAGUE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

The 2005 Patriot League Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held March 3-6 at campus sites.The women’s team will open the tournament by taking on top-seeded Holy Cross at 8 p.m., Thursday, March 3 at Holy Cross’ Hart Center, televised live nationally on CSTV (DIRECTV channel 610). CSTV’s third season of NCAA baseball–NCAA Baseball on CSTV presented by Easton Sports, premieres Sunday, March 20, with 2004 NCAA runner-up and current #4 Texas visiting #8 Baylor. The schedule also features Army, Baylor, Lafayette, Iowa, Loyola Marymount, Missouri, Notre Dame, Rhode Island, St. John’s, San Diego State, Stanford, and UNLV.

YU RECEIVES NSF GRANT FOR BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING RESEARCH

Yih-Choung Yu, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has received a $138,000 National Science Foundation grant for research on modeling the human cardiovascular system and developing optimal heart-assist devices.

HUTCHISON ’91 TO DIRECT COLLEGE THEATER’S YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU

Lijuan Xu, instruction coordinator, Skillman Library, has been chosen as winner of the Association of College & Research Libraries’ Instruction Section Publication Award along with coauthor Trudi E. Jacobson for Motivating Students in Information Literacy Classes (Neal-Schuman Publishers, 2004).
