Tired of corporate America’s bureaucracy, James I. Painter ’59 decided to begin his own consulting firm, Jim Painter & Associates. Often considered a “success guru,” Painter has published Everyone’s Success Formula: How to be the best you can be. The book offers six simple steps and various examples to help the average person reach his or her full potential.

Painter has been a fascinated observer of successful people for the last 30 years. His book collects these observations and provides advice and encouragement to those who need guidance with how to get what they truly want from their lives.

“They’re optimistic and great listeners,” Painter says of the successful people he has studied over the years. “They have active minds and are fearless; they think they can do something and they just go do it.”

Painter also devotes a significant amount of time to children. He is an advocate for children, a career counselor for high school students, and a high school tennis coach. Painter’s involvement with children evolved from his substitute teaching and, he suspects, from his nine grandchildren.

The education he received as an industrial engineering student at Lafayette was pivotal in helping him make a career move from industry to leading his own company.

“Whatever problem was presented to me, I felt I had the tools to solve it,” Painter says.
