Blue Mountain Health System has named Thomas Bizup ’96 its new director of engineering. His responsibilities include maintenance and facilities management for the Palmerton and Gnaden Huetten hospital campuses.

“My charge is to create a common vision between the two engineering groups because it’s a newly formed partnership between two companies,” he says.

His new position finds him switching industries completely. Before joining Blue Mountain Health System, Bizup worked in heavy industry for ESSROC Cement. At the Nazareth, Pa. cement company, he was assistant plant manager, a position that included the responsibility of production and maintenance of two cement manufacturing plants and the management of union and company relations between ESSROC and 200 employees. He attributes his career flexibility to his college experience.

“My education at Lafayette provided me with all the tools I needed to meet the challenges of changing industries,” Bizup says.

A mechanical engineering graduate, Bizup notes that Leonard Van Gulick, Matthew Baird Professor of International Studies and Mechanical Engineering, encouraged his educational and career goals.

“Dr. Van Gulick was the most influential professor I had when I was at Lafayette,” Bizup says. “He was a great source of encouragement and motivation for me.”

Bizup is furthering his education in the MBA program at Lehigh University. He holds an associate degree in mechanical drafting technology from Lincoln Technical Institute in Allentown, Pa.
