BAKER ’06 ADDRESSES FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Andrew Baker ’06, a Marquis Scholar who is pursuing two degrees—B.S. civil engineering and A.B. with majors in Spanish and international studies—presented research on a project that involves perfecting an absorbent material to remove arsenic from groundwater. He is an EXCEL Scholar with Arthur Kney, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, who also gave a presentation at the conference in Ecuador.

FIORE ’08 STUDIES COOLANT COMPOUND USED IN AIR CONDITIONERS
Victor Fiore ’08 conducted research in computational chemical kinetics as an EXCEL Scholar assistant with Kenneth Haug, associate professor of chemistry. CONFERENCE ON AFRICA EXPLORES AID, DEBT, AND DEPENDENCY
Award-winning author Molefi K. Asante Jr ’04, featured in the Oct. 30 Philadelphia Inquirer, was among guest presenters at second annual conference on Africa organized by the student group Africans Creating African Consciousness and Interest Abroad (ACACIA). The focus of the Oct. 21-23 event was “Aid, Debt, and Dependency: An African Addiction?”

NOBLE INSTALLS ZANG TUMB TUMB II SCULPTURE AT UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA
Alastair Noble, assistant professor of art, installs 20-by-30-foot minimalist sculpture based on a futurist’s poem. Civil engineering major Jessica Haase ’07 worked with him to prepare the piece.

FOOTBALL IN FIRST PLACE AFTER 33-20 WIN OVER BUCKNELL
Brad Maurer threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Joe Ort with 1:47 remaining to break a 20-20 tie, and Tye Murphy provided an insurance score with a 50-yard interception return as Lafayette improved to 3-0 in the Patriot League with a 33-20 win over Bucknell Saturday. MEN’S SOCCER QUALIFIES FOR PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT; IN THREE-WAY TIE FOR FIRST PLACE
Freshman Chad Barbieri scored the lone goal of the game in the 70th minute, as Lafayette held on for a 1-0 win over Holy Cross Sunday. Lafayette improved to 10-4-1 overall, 4-2 in Patriot League play and remained in a three-way tie for first place in the Patriot League. The win assures one of four spots in the Patriot League Tournament Nov. 11 & 13 at a site to be determined. MERRILL ’96 NAMED REPORTER FOR CBS4 NEWS
Having joined CBS4 in March 2004, Kate Merrill ’96 was recently named general assignment reporter for CBS4 News. She previously reported news for WNBC-TV in New York. She began her career as a college intern at WCBV-TV in Boston. Upon graduating she moved to upstate New York to report for WICZ-TV and WIVT-TV. In 1998 Merrill started working as an anchor and reporter for WKRN-TV in Nashville, Tenn., where she received an Emmy Award for her role in covering the tornado that hit Tennessee in 1999. She also received two awards for her investigative reporting. A government and law graduate, Merrill interned at WFMZ Channel 69, Allentown as a weekend reporter and news writer when she was a senior.
