Bowne & Co. Inc., a New York City-based financial printer, has named Scott L. Spitzer ’73 senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary.

Spitzer’s responsibilities include providing legal counsel to the board of directors and senior management, addressing broad operational and strategic issues, and managing the legal department. He hopes to enhance cost-effective legal services and corporate compliance activities for Bowne.

“It is rewarding to be part of a successful senior management team and contribute to the development of the enterprise,” he says. “It is also rewarding to provide practical advice and counsel to key business leaders and to address diverse legal issues.”

Spitzer remains active in the Lafayette community as an alumni admissions representative and by sponsoring January externships at Bowne for current students, giving them a close-up look at the job of an in-house attorney.

“I have strong, positive views and fond memories of my undergraduate education and years on campus,” he says. “I would like to see the College retain and increase its strong academic standing and enviable reputation.”

A government and law graduate, Spitzer remembers several professors who had a significant impact on his education and career path, including government and law professor Michael Glantz, who offered Spitzer an opportunity to run for delegate in the 1972 Democratic Party national convention.

“He was a guiding light in helping me and a number of other students,” he says. “The experience was memorable and increased my interest in government affairs and public service.”

As a McKelvy House resident, Spitzer found a forum to discuss a variety of issues under the guidance of James P. Crawford, associate professor of mathematics.

“His abiding interest in cross-disciplinary intellectual topics made for fascinating discussions and increased my interest in a broad range of endeavors,” says Spitzer.
