Four new members of the Board of Trustees began five-year terms July 1 (2006). They are Carl G. Anderson, Jr. ’67 (Reading, Pa.), Margaret Golieb Axelrod ’74 (New York, N.Y.), Angel L. Mendez ’82 (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), and Robert E. Sell ’84 (Far Hills, N.J.).
Anderson is chairman of the board and CEO of Arrow International, Inc., Reading, Pa. The company manufactures cardiac and critical care products used to diagnose and treat critically ill patients. He previously served for five years as president and CEO of ABC School Supply, a manufacturer of educational products. He was vice president and general manager of the retail consumer products division of James River Corp. and vice president and general manager of Nestle Foods Corp. He also currently serves as a director for Carpenter Technology Corporation.
A former chair of the Lafayette Leadership Council and a former board associate, Anderson served as alumni trustee from 2001-05. He is also a former member of the Parents’ Council, an alumni admissions representative, and class fund manager. He received the Alumni Chapter Event Chair of the Year Award in 1999.
A mechanical engineering graduate, Anderson holds an MBA from Lehigh University. He and his wife, Deborah, are the parents of Carl G. Anderson III, a 2001 graduate. Anderson III is married to Leanne Speitel Anderson, a 2002 graduate. Deborah serves on the Advisory Council of the Friends of the Williams Center.
Carl and Deborah Anderson, sustaining members of the Marquis Society, have endowed three funds benefiting engineering students and faculty at Lafayette. The Carl G., Jr. ’67 and Deborah B. Anderson P’01 Mechanical Engineering Endowment, established in 1998, is used for equipment purchases, laboratory renovations, and support of faculty development in the mechanical engineering department.
Earnings from the Carl G. Jr. ’67 and Deborah B. Anderson P’01 Engineering Equipment Endowment, established in 2002, are used at the discretion of the director of engineering for the purchase of equipment.
Established in 2003, the Carl G., Jr. ’67 and Deborah B. Anderson P’01 Mechanical Engineering Prize Endowment funds an annual award given to a student, selected by the head of the mechanical engineering department, for high academic achievement and the promise of career excellence.
Axelrod is a member of the law firm of Muchnick Golieb & Golieb, P.C. in New York City. The firm specializes in federal and state tax law, corporate law, and trust and estate law.
In addition to her legal work, Axelrod serves as President of the Board of Directors of The G & A Foundation, Inc. and as an officer and director of The Katzenberger Foundation, Inc.
A former board associate and sponsor of externships for Lafayette students, Axelrod is a sustaining member of the Marquis Society. She established the Golieb Family Scholarship Fund to provide student financial aid.
After graduating from Lafayette magna cum laude with majors in economics & business and French, Axelrod earned a JD from George Washington University. She is a member of the New York State Bar.
Mendez is senior vice president of worldwide manufacturing for Cisco Systems, Inc., San Jose, Calif. He previously was senior vice president of global operations at palmOne, Inc. (now Palm, Inc.). Hispanic Business magazine named him among the 650 most influential Hispanic business people in America in 2001 and included him in its 20-person Corporate Elite Directory this year. Business 2.0 Magazine named him to its “Dream Team of All Star Executives Any Company Would Kill For” in 2003.
A former board associate, he has sponsored externships for Lafayette students. A member of the Marquis Society, he established the KAM Scholarship Fund at Lafayette to provide student financial aid.
An electrical engineering graduate, he holds an MBA from Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College.
Sell is managing partner and COO of Accenture’s North American Communications and High Tech practice based out of New York City, and is a member of the Management Committee of the worldwide management and technology consulting firm. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce.
Sell was president of the Alumni Association from 2004-06 and chaired its Long-Range Planning Committee. A former board associate and member of the Alumni Council’s Executive Committee and Alumni Affairs Transition Team, Sell was a member of the search committee that identified Daniel H. Weiss as Lafayette’s 16th president and a member of the Committee on the Presidential Inauguration. He has served as the past president of the Maroon Club and was the alumni representative on President Weiss’s Athletics Working Group this spring. He is a sustaining member of the Marquis Society.
He continues to support Accenture’s recruiting efforts on campus and has personally sponsored internships for Lafayette students.
An economics and business graduate, he has a number of family members who are also alumni, including his father, the late Richard H. Sell Jr. ’60, brothers Stephen ’90 and Kyle ’92, and cousin Erik Marsh ’95.
