Cooper Wessells ’88 had been a self-described “lurker” when it came to the Internet. Neither a blogger on web sites nor a poster on message boards, Wessells was content to read content, but not participate in the “discussion.” Then, two things happened.

In February, his daughter was born. That amazing event is enough to make any parent want to share the news with the world (let alone the World Wide Web). Then Wessells found out through his work with Lafayette’s development office that an alumni online community was going to be launched and voila! The mechanical engineering graduate posted an announcement of his daughter’s birth and her photo.

“I got several nice messages from old friends after I posted them,” he explains. “They wanted to know what I’ve been up to.”

Wessells—who started the Friends of Lafayette Crew alumni and parents organization—will soon be moving from California to Philadelphia. He hopes to forge new friendships with fellow alumni and he encourages others to join the alumni online community to help the process.

“To make the community work, everyone needs to register,” he says. “Think about those you’ve lost touch with. Normally, I’m not a poster; I’m a lurker. This time, however, I reached out and the reward is that I found out that it’s nice to connect with old friends.”

Registration for the Alumni Online Community is available from the alumni web site.
