One of my greatest joys since I’ve been at Lafayette is that I continue to have the opportunity to teach. As a teacher and scholar, I have greatly enjoyed joining Lafayette’s distinguished faculty, and with that, the classroom involvement with our students.
As we begin the strategic planning process we are fortunate to be in an environment that has academics at its core, and our students and faculty as the focus of what we do. Lafayette is a special place that has always been distinctive for its student-focused, caring, and mentoring environment.
At the time of Lafayette’s founding there was a need by the citizens of Easton for students who would graduate prepared academically to meet the challenges of that era, in close proximity to the College. Today, as trustee George Jenkins so aptly put it recently, we need to be in the business of creating academically distinctive graduates prepared for a global world.
The challenges of reaching this goal are substantial, but we are well equipped to succeed. During the brief time I have been associated with Lafayette I’ve been deeply impressed by the capacity of our total community, faculty, students, alumni, parents, and staff to face challenges together. This capacity, along with our exceptional commitment to the educational mission, is the chief reason for my sense of optimism that we are uniquely well positioned to meet the challenges of a world changing rapidly and significantly in ways that are not readily apparent.
In writing the next exciting chapter of the College, what we do, we’ll do together and I am confident that together we can continue our progress to become a premier small college that is academically distinctive and international in reach and presence.
