The Lafayette Board of Trustees’ statement condemning the genocide in Darfurwas mentioned in the issue’s “Quick Takes” article.

Philadelphia Inquirer (Pa.), Nov. 12
The new CD by Skip Wilkins, assistant professor of music, Skip Wilkins Quintet: Volume Ireceived a solid review in the Inquirer. The first CD in a two-album package, Volume I was released by Dreambox Media in September. “Pianist Skip Wilkins goes from soulful, gut-bucket mode to rich ballads to angular modern jazz on this tasteful set of original tunes,” states the review.

New York Times, Nov. 10
In the article “Thanksgiving Day Games: Old Rivalries, Then the Turkey,” Lafayette’s Fisher Field is listed as the location for the 100th Easton-Phillipsburg game on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 23. The story previewed a number of long-standing, high school football rivalries.

The most recent book byDonald L. Miller, John Henry MacCracken Professor of History, has garnered glowing reviews. Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, released Oct. 10 by Simon & Schuster, is Miller’s eighth published work and third WWII book. It examines the social and psychological effects of World War II on bomber crews of the American Eighth Air Force, German citizens, and the English people.

John Kincaid, Robert B. and Helen S. Meyner Professor of Government and Public Service and director of Lafayette’s Meyner Center for the Study of State and Local Government, was quoted in the article, “In Races for Governor, Party May Be Secondary.”

Lafayette’s role in the development of a major new work of performance art focusing on the American identity in the post-9/11 era was highlighted in the article “Questioning U.S. Identity in the Aftermath of 9/11.” The Times spoke with poet Sekou Sundiata about his “The 51st (dream) State” as he prepared to stage its premier New York performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Sundiata began developing “The 51st (dream) State” during a yearlong residency at Lafayette as part of the First-Year Experience program for the Class of 2008.

Kathryn Longshore ’07 (Philadelphia, Pa.), a psychology major, was quoted in the article “I’ll Be Back in 262 Seconds.” The story discusses student use of the online social networking service, Facebook.

Erin C. McKan, assistant director of admissions, was quoted in the article “Isn’t the SAT Enough Stress?” McKan explains a number of do’s-and-don’ts as part of the college interview process.

The 10th anniversary and current exhibits of Lafayette’s Experimental Printmaking Institute were highlighted in the article “Shows celebrate Lafayette print institute’s first decade of experiments.”

A number of Lafayette students and faculty including: Mark Crain, Simon Professor of Political Economy and chair of Policy Studies; Jayne Miller ’10 (Bethel, Pa.), Karen Ruggles ’08 (Easton, Pa.), an English and art double major; Bradley Knepper ’08 (Branchburg, N.J.) an economics and business major; and Amanda Pisetzner ’10 (Puyallup, Wash.), were interviewed for their work on Lafayette’s Election Night coverage. An article and television segment focused on the production of ENvision, the College’s first-ever, undergraduate run, live election broadcast.

A Council Rock High School-South graduate is taking part in an in-depth examination of George W. Bush’s presidency that’s under way at Lafayette. David Stamm ’08, a 2004 CR South graduate, is reading through the president’s various documents including proclamations, signing statements, and speeches “to come up with some empirical measure of how often Bush discusses state and local issues as opposed to international issues like the [Iraqi] war.” The CR South grad said he quickly noticed while doing the research that Bush does not follow past Republican tendencies to focus on state and local issues. Stamm is working through the college EXCEL Scholars program to collect data for John Kincaid, Meyner Professor of Government and Public Service.

Ocean County Observer (N.J.); Tukertown Beacon (N.J.); Beacon (N.J.), Sept. 21
Little Egg Harbor resident Kaytlin Henry ’07is paving the way to a cleaner and safer environment. This summer, Henry, a senior at Lafayette College, researched a new method for industrial emissions to be less expensive and more environmentally friendly than the current processes. As a Marquis Scholar, Henry was granted the rare opportunity to conduct intensive research during her undergraduate studies. She conducted her studies under the watchful eye of Sam Morton, assistant professor of chemical engineering at the College. “It’s really fortunate that I was able to do this research because I want to go to graduate school and this is preparing me for that,” Henry said.
