In recognition of World AIDS Day Dec. 1, numerous campus organizations have joined together to host World AIDS Week. Various activities and lectures promoting awareness of HIV and AIDS are planned for Nov. 28- Dec. 1.

All week there will be a red ribbon fundraiser during lunchtime in the Landis Atrium of Farinon College Center. Ribbons will be distributed and $2 donations will be collected to support the prevention and awareness of HIV/AIDS.

The organizations sponsoring World AIDS Week include: Association of Black Collegians, International Students Association, Hispanic Students of Lafayette, Student Government, Student Life, Office of Intercultural Development, Brothers of Lafayette, Alternative School Break, Lafayette African & Caribbean Student Association, Pi Phi, Tri Delta, Alpha Phi, Panhellenic Council, Inter Fraternity Council, and Nia (Multicultural Women’s Support Group).

“It is important for college students to take time to recognize an event such as World AIDS Day because HIV/AIDS is an epidemic that is increasingly plaguing people who are of college age.” says organizer Shani Bellegarde ’08 (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a member of Nia and a government and law major. “The first step in prevention is education. The events this week will show students that HIV/AIDS is not a disease that discriminates, and that anyone is susceptible to acquiring it.”
