Lafayette Jazz Combo will present its fall concert 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4 in the Williams Center for the Arts auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Tom DiCarlo, visiting part-time instructor of music, the group will perform jazz selections featuring various student soloists.

Mathematics major and Trustee Scholar Joseph Dudek ’09 (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.), history major Sean Gough ’09 (North Plainfield, N.J.), economics and business major Christoffer Johnston ’08 (Delaware, Ohio), physics major and Marquis Scholar Zachary Quinlan ’09 (Everett, Wash.), and psychology major Christopher Velderman ’09 (Westfield, N.J.) will be featured soloists.

Jazz Combo will perform “Crisis,” written by Freddie Hubbbard as played by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers; “Shawnuff,” written by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie; “Akatumbo,” a Japanese folk melody arranged by pianist George Colligan; “Raincheck,” written by Billy Strayhorn; and “Two for the Blues,” written by Ray Brown.

DiCarlo emphasizes music’s pivotal role in helping stimulate thought and action in non-musical areas and building individual confidence.

“The study of music develops an overall discipline of the mind that transfers to other subjects and helps to develop critical thinking skills,” he says. “The study of improvisation enhances a student’s creativity, promotes social development, character, and self-worth. Students gain a sense of discipline, self-esteem, and pride of accomplishment.”
