Lafayette students will find out who among their peers has all the right moves with SynchroMotion’s “So You Think You Can Dance” competition 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8 in the Farinon College Center Atrium.

There is no contestant entrance fee, and the entire campus community is invited to watch the action.

“This dance competition is important because it gives dancers in the Lafayette community that are not involved with dance club the chance to perform for their friends and peers,” says biology major Casey Argento ’09 (Pittsburgh, Pa.), a member of SynchroMotion and co-chair of the event. “It is not only a competition, it is a performance for the members of SynchroMotion so they can show off their hard work and talent during the first semester. We are a new club and know we have the potential to do great things.”

Among the criteria judges will use to rank contestants are creativity, costume, and group togetherness. Competitors must create an original dance that is at least one minute in length. All types of dance are allowed.

There will be a cash prize for the first place group. Second and third place groups will receive ribbons and small gifts.

Judging this year’s competition will be Robert Allan, associate professor of psychology; SynchroMotionadviser Karen Haduck, interlibrary resource sharing specialist; and a Latin dance instructor who has previously taught dance classes in Kirby gym.

SynchroMotion will open the competition with a tap dance choreographed by Trey Jackson ’10 (Germantown, Md.). It also will close the evening’s events with a hip-hop dance mix choreographed by Argento and English major Tori King ’09 (Ho Ho Kus, N.J.).

Argento encourages everyone to come out and support SynchroMotion and the students who are competing.

“There will be many different types of dance showcased,” Argento says. “We had so much fun with this event last year, and there were only three contestants. The audience was great, and the performances were fantastic. This year we have at least seven groups, maybe more, and we are looking for an even bigger turnout than last year.”

The competition is sponsored by Recreation Services, International Students Association, and Lafayette radio station WJRH.
