The Lafayette Alumni Association invites alumni and their families to an evening of culture and camaraderie Sunday, March 25, at the Hunterdon Museum of Art, 7 Lower Center Street, Clinton, N.J. A cocktail reception will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by a museum tour at 6:30 p.m. guided by Jim Toia, director of Lafayette’s Grossman Gallery and Community-Based Teaching Program.

“It’s my pleasure to connect Lafayette alumni with something very dear to me,” says Toia. “I’m on the board of the Hunterdon and have exhibited there in the past. The museum is an incredibly dynamic place which I believe in very strongly. It is situated in the heart of Hunterdon County — basically a farm community for the last two centuries. However, it is only 55 miles from one of the major cultural centers in the world, New York City. So we have the distinct advantage to bring truly cutting-edge art to this bedroom community.

“The museum also has a vibrant education program that brings young students into the museum and teaches them many different aspects of art through both studio and art history classes. There are also lectures, artist’s workshops, film screenings, wine tastings, marathon drawing sessions — all located in a magnificent 19th-century mill on the South Branch of the Raritan River in this beautiful, bucolic little town.”

One exhibit visitors will see is War in the World: Artists Respond to the Last Five Years, which displays different reactions to the last five years of war on many fronts. Another is Tom Nussbaum, New Work: Sculpture, Paper Cutouts, Drawings. The Montclair artist uses quiet signs and symbols to portray images of the everyman and the world. The work captures many fleeting moments of reflection and realization that are common to all.

Toia has taught sculpture and painting courses at Lafayette since 1997. He has shown his work throughout the U.S. and abroad, including Italy, Germany, Taiwan, and Costa Rica. His work has been reviewed in publications such as the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Artweek, and Sculpture.

RSVP for the event with payment in full is due by Monday, March 5. A guest list and nametags at the museum will serve as admission to the exhibits.

The following must be provided to register: Required information to RSVP is name; check for $20 per person payable to Lafayette College or credit card name, number, and expiration date; address; daytime phone number; email address; and name and class/affiliation of all attending as they should appear on nametags. Mail by Lafayette College, Office of Alumni Affairs, 223 Pfenning Alumni Center, Easton, PA 18042-1768.
