Fish Tales, a 16-foot collaborative artist’s book of poems and other visual and written art, has been donated to Skillman Library’s Artists Book Collection in Special Collections. The book, with a front and back cover resembling a fish head and tail, is currently on display in a case to the right of Skillman’s front entrance.
More than 50 students from both sides of the Delaware River have contributed artwork and poetry to the book. It was done as a celebration of the Easton Shad Festival.
According to Diane Shaw, special collections librarian and College archivist, the book serves a number of purposes besides just being a new entry in the library’s artists and angling book collections.
“This is an area of collecting that we love,” says Shaw. “The book is colorful and exciting and it shows the students that they can be successful with a book like this. This kind of project shows our support for the local community and is also inspirational to the students.”
Beth Smith, art teacher, and Barbara English, English instructor, from Phillipsburg Middle School; and Kim Hogan, watercolor instructor, and Colin Wall, writing instructor, for H.O.M.E.S. of Easton, directed their students in the visual and writing exercises found in the book.
Book design, digital images, typesetting, and binding were donated by Maryann Riker of JUSTRIP Press of Phillipsburg.
