U-CAN makes college search easier for prospective students and parents

Today, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) launched a first-of-its-kind web site putting information from over 600 participating private colleges and universities, including Lafayette, at the fingertips of prospective students and parents.

The University and College Accountability Network (U-CAN) is an NAICU consumer-information initiative in response to focus groups with consumers and requests from the United States Congress and Department of Education. The site will fill an increasing need for important college information to become more readily available and consumer-friendly. U-CAN’s design and information have been formulated according to consumer direction and feedback.

Free for consumers, as well as participating colleges and universities, U-CAN contains profiles of all participating institutions structured in a common template. Profiles display comparative data and links to campus information and specific areas of the institution.

The in-depth information in the institutional profiles includes admissions, enrollment, academics, student demographics, graduation rates, most common fields of study, transfer of credit policy, accreditation, faculty information, class size, tuition and fee trends, price of attendance, financial aid, campus housing, student life, and campus safety.

Consumers will also be able to search institutions by city, state, distance from home, size, affiliation, highest degree offering, Carnegie classification, and general types of programs offered (e.g., liberal arts, teacher preparation, professional, etc.).

Other important available information includes average loans at graduation, undergraduate class-size breakdown, and net tuition for hundreds of colleges. This information comes from the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) survey and the Common Data Set.
