Timothy Zirkel ’08 (Honey Brook, Pa.) is among nine students nationally to receive a scholarship award from Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the international honor society for the computing and information disciplines. The scholarships are awarded for academic achievement and contributions to the local UPE chapter.
A Marquis Scholar who is pursuing two B.S. degrees, one in computer science and one in math, he is a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, the honorary national mathematics society. Zirkel is also president of the Arts Society; musical director of the Chorduroys, an a cappella group; a member of the College Choirs, and trombone player in the Jazz Ensemble.
“Tim has distinguished himself in his coursework, where he is very quick to grasp and apply difficult concepts. Moreover, he was an EXCEL scholar during the summer of 2007. He studied computer networks under the supervision of Xiaoyan Li [assistant professor of computer science],” says William Collins, associate professor of computer science and adviser to Lafayette’s chapter of UPE.
“I am very excited to have won the scholarship,” says Zirkel. “Undergraduates in each of the over 230 chapters of UPE can apply for this, so it isn’t something I expected to receive.”
Zirkel also served as an EXCEL Scholar with Clifford Reiter, professor of mathematics, in developing a visualization scheme to simulate flowing fluid. He’s a member of the College’s chapters of UPE and the Association for Computing Machinery.
