“Mappings of Memory” show is part of Black History Month celebration

An exhibit of works by Janet Taylor Pickett entitled “Mappings of Memory” will be on display in the Portlock Black Cultural Center (PBCC), 101 McCartney Street, as a part of the College’s celebration of Black History Month. The show will run from Friday, Feb. 1 through Wednesday, March 5.

At 5 p.m. on Feb. 27, a discussion on Pickett’s works will be held in the PBCC. The exhibit was organized by the Office of Intercultural Development. For more information, call the Portlock Black Cultural Center at x5819. The gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Pickett’s works chronicle the physical and spiritual journey of African Americans. Through her works she strives to express her identity as a person of African descent. She often uses garments, like the dress and jacket, as metaphors for this identity.

“I am exploring the deep passages of identity. If it had not been for those ancestors who survived the passage, then I would not be here,” explains Pickett in her artist’s statement.

Pickett served as a professor of art at Essex County College for over 30 years before retiring. She is currently an adjunct professor of creative arts and technology at Bloomfield College. Pickett also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Montclair Art Museum.

Pickett is not new to Lafayette. She held a solo exhibit in the Williams Center for the Arts gallery in 2000. She has also had her works displayed in numerous solo and group exhibits around the country.

A native of Michigan, Pickett received her MFA and BFA from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design.
