Eleven biology majors and one neuroscience major will be presenting research papers with their faculty advisers at the 84th annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science April 4-6 at the Holiday Inn in Grantville, Pa.

Alison M. Boyd ’08 (Lafayette, N.J.) and Dustin T. Bednarz ’08 (Shavertown, Pa.) worked on two related projects with James Dearworth, assistant professor of biology. Boyd will present “Isolation of melanopsin in the retina of the turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans” and Bednarz will present “Stimulation of the trochlear nerve in the turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans.”

Robert C. Peoples ’08 (Bear, Del.) and Tyler M. Saxton ’08 (Pleasanton, Calif.) worked with Bernard Fried, Kreider Professor Emeritus of Biology, on research focusing on food-borne parasites. Peoples will present “The effects of various chemical and physical factors on encystment and excystment of Zygocotyle lunata” and Saxton will present “Chemical excystation of Echinostoma caproni, E. trivolvis, and Zygocotyle lunata.

Two students will present breast cancer research completed with Robert Kurt, associate professor of biology. Priyanka Nair ’08 (Kerala, India) worked on “Investigation of immune response following LPS stimulation of 4T1 murine mammary carcinoma” and Chiquita A. Palha De Sousa ’08 (Harare, Zimbabwe), who is also majoring in art, completed “TLR4 stimulation of 4t1 murine mammary carcinoma cells and bone marrow-derived dendritic Cells.”

Michael T. Favara ’08 (Aberdeen, N.J.) and Aviva J. Goel ’08 (Maharashtra, India) performed research with Shyamal K. Majumdar, Kreider Professor Emeritus of Biology. Favara will present “Antiproliferative effects and cell death induction in 4t1 mouse breast cancer cells by tamoxifen, raloxifene, and their combination” and Goel will present “Cytotoxic and antitumorigenic effects of tamoxifen, raloxifene and their combination in 4t1 mouse breast cancer cells.”

Two students have worked with Manuel Ospina-Giraldo, assistant professor of biology. Lauren A. Seyer ’08 (Wayne, N.J.) will present “Characterization of cutinase genes in Phytophthora infestans” and John J. Griffith ’09 (Franklin, Mass.) will present “Isolation and cloning of glycoside hydrolase genes from Phytophthora infestans.”

Katherine Schultes ’08 (Woodbury, N.J.) and neuroscience major Tess Crouss ’08 (Friday Harbor, Wash.) will present “Effects of alcohol sedation on learning and memory in Drosophila melanogaster,” which they worked on with Elaine Reynolds, associate professor of biology and chair of neuroscience.
