Economics graduate Sandy Kazinski ’85 has dedicated much time to the fight against breast cancer, participating in five 60-mile fund-raising walks for the Susan Komen Foundation, most recently one in San Diego last November.
“I decided to do this because the statistic of one in seven women getting breast cancer scares me, and because we haven’t found a cure yet,” she says. “It’s one of the easiest things I can do to help this fight.”
She will discuss her work as a volunteer, including service as a class correspondent and member of Council of Lafayette Women, at CLW’s biennial conference, Broadening Horizons Deepening Understanding, April 4-5. She will serve on a panel, “Volunteering—Finding Your Fit, Following Your Passion, and Knowing When to Say No,” along with Elisabeth Hughes MacDonald ’81, Barbara Levy ’77, Simmone Chaddan ’04, and Liz Fallon ’75.
Kazinski, who also is actively involved in the New York Junior League, trains extensively for her three-day walks, logging 700-800 training miles.
The walks begin on Friday morning with opening ceremonies and participants then walk all day until they reach camp in the evening. They sleep in pup tents, eat in the mess tent, enjoy entertainment and testimonials, then go to sleep. On Saturday, they start all over again. Closing ceremonies take place on Sunday, and Kazinski feels they “rival a graduation ceremony and rock concert combined.”
“[When you] high-five 4,000 people after finishing this walk, you will never be the same person,” she says. “There are lots of tears, lots of emotions running high, and this awesome sense of having changed the world.”
So far, Kazinski has raised $70,000 for the cause. She plans to complete her sixth walk in Philadelphia in November with Kim Rakow McChesney ’85, who will speak at the CLW Conference about how she has coped with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Aside from her walks, Kazinski has also run at least 15 five-kilometer races for breast cancer since 1999. For more information on the three-day events, visit www.the3day.org.
Kazinski has served as class correspondent since her graduation with the exception of one five-year term. She received the Alumni Association’s Clifton P. Mayfield ’09 Outstanding Young Alumni Award in 2000.
She has worked on Wall Street since 1987 as a corporate trainer for Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, Deutsche Bank, and now UBS, where she is a director in the global talent management group. She completed NYU’s School of Continuing Education certification in learning and development/organizational development in 1997.
