Lafayette swimming senior Jaryd Freedman (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) has been named one of 58 NCAA winter-sport student-athletes to be awarded an educational grant through the NCAA postgraduate scholarship program.
Freedman receives a one-time, non-renewable grant of $7,500 from the NCAA. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.
The Biochemistry major currently holds a 3.96 grade-point average and is a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient. Freedman is a Trustee Scholar who has received the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and the James F. Bryan ’40 Excellence Award in 2007. A member of the Student Advisory Athletic Committee, Freedman is also the founder and president of the Health Professions Preparatory Club. He has earned a spot on the Dean List all seven semesters and was named the 2007 Maroon Club Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In the pool, the senior captain has held top-five spots in several events in his career and has been a Patriot League Championship participant in each of his four seasons. In recognition of his leadership skills, he was awarded the 2007 Lafayette Swim Team Spirit Award.
Lafayette swimming and diving head coach Jim Dailey knows the dedication that Freedman has made to both the classroom and pool during his four years at Lafayette.
“I’m very proud of all of Jaryd’s accomplishments and this is the pinnacle of them all, Dailey said. “Being named a recipient of a NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship is an outstanding way of recognizing him for his efforts over four years.”
“Jaryd has worked to balance academics and athletics. He achieved the highest levels in both realms and at times made it look very easy. I look forward to watching his medical career take off and see where it takes him.”

The postgraduate scholarship honor comes one day after being named the recipient of Class of 1913 Trophy, one of the Lafayette athletic department’s most prominent honors.Freedman is Lafayette’s second student-athlete in five years to win both the Goldwater and postgraduate scholarship grant. Meghan Ramsey ’04 was also awarded both prestigious honors. Stephen Bono ’05, co-captain of the 2004 Patriot League championship football team was also awarded the postgraduate scholarship in 2005.
