Lafayette faculty and students come together to diminish waste during student move-out

Lafayette students and faculty are collecting furniture, unopened food, and personal items discarded by students moving out for the summer as part of Lafayette’s Green Move-Out. Sponsored by the College’s Informal Green Committee and Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection (LEAP), all items collected will be donated to local organizations to minimize waste.

Graduating seniors and students living in off-campus, college-owned housing may still drop off items in designated locations beginning Saturday, May 24 until Monday, May 26 at 4 p.m.

Local community partners are accepting:

Comforters, blankets, bedding and towels
Coats and clothing
Unopened, nonperishable food items
Lamps, fans, small appliances and furniture
Vases, glassware and cookware
Central collection areas for all items can be found in Rubin, Ruef, Conway, Watson, South and Soles residence halls. Collection boxes for books, food and clothing can be found in all residence halls. There are also large protected outdoor areas behind Watson Courts, 511 College Avenue, Newman House, and the Parson Street Arts Houses.

Geology major Laura Bochner ’10 (Bethlehem, Pa.), co-president of LEAP, is pleased with the success of the event thus far.

“Student and faculty volunteers are very energetic and efficient and we are recovering a lot,” she says. “In one day (last Saturday), we estimated that we collected about 300 pounds of unopened, nonperishable food. It’s been very uplifting to see, on Lafayette’s campus, this great reduction of waste and, correlatively, this production of opportunities for others.”
