Lafayette has had 21 students receive the honor in the past nine years

Deirdre Maher ’08, Stephanie Morillo ’08, Michael Zboray ’08, Danielle Horowitz ’08, Diana Galperin ’08 and Karen Bouldin ’08 have been awarded Fulbright Grants to study and teach at various locations around the globe. Lafayette has had 21 students receive Fulbright Grants in the past nine years.

The students, who all graduated May 24, received English Teaching Assistantships to teach conversational English to high school or college students as well as improve their knowledge of the United States. Maher (A.B.English/art) will be traveling to Turkey. Morillo (A.B. creative media and social justice) will be working in the Terengganu province in West Malaysia. Zboray (A.B. German/economics & business) is being stationed in Germany. Horowitz (A.B. government & law/Spanish) will be going to Chile to teach and also research poverty eradication strategies. Bouldin (A.B. international affairs), who has been upgraded from an alternate, will be teaching in South Korea.

Galperin (A.B. international affairs/French) declined the Fulbright to accept the Carnegie Endowment Junior Fellowship. Lafayette is the only exclusively undergraduate liberal arts and engineering college among the institutions whose students were honored with Carnegie fellowships.

Allison Thompson ’08 (A.B. art) is an alternate for a teaching assistantship in Hong Kong. Roxanna Kobziar ’08 (A.B. international affairs/Russian and East European Studies) is an alternate for an environmental studies grant in the Ukraine.

Bouldin, Maher, and Galperin have taken advantage of the many opportunities Lafayette offers for undergraduate research with faculty mentors. Bouldin wrote her honors thesis under the guidance of John McCartney, professor of government and law and chair of Africana Studies, exploring Cuba’s economic revitalization and development strategy. Maher worked on an honors thesis looking at handwriting as a unique and highly personal art form. Her adviser was Curlee Holton, professor and head of art and director of the Experimental Printmaking Institute. Galperin completed an honors thesis and worked on EXCEL research with Joshua Sanborn, associate professor of history.

Maher and Morillo have also taken advantage of Lafayette’s close proximity to New York City by serving internships at a number of companies in the city. Maher has worked at the Howard Scott Gallery and Novita Communications, a public relations firm in Brooklyn. Morillo held positions at the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Penguin Publishing, Inc., and MTV Networks.

  • Our Proximity Advantage: New York City internships, externships, and career networking are part of the unique Lafayette student experience

Morillo believes Lafayette’s focus on close student-faculty interaction has helped her obtain a Fulbright.

“I believe Lafayette has provided me with an experience I wouldn’t have had anywhere else. Lafayette is small enough that a student can interact and build a rapport not only with faculty but with administrators and staff,” she says. “The networks are important as Lafayette is full of resources. As a Posse Scholar, my relationships with my fellow Posse Scholars and my mentor, Rose Marie Bukics [Jones Professor of Economics and Business], have been an incredible part of my experience.”

Like Morillo, Horowitz credits her success to the close relationships with Lafayette faculty and staff that she has formed.

“I think I really lucked out because I could not be happier with the people I have had the privilege to get to know,” says Horowitz. “I know others can have this experience at other schools but it’s not very common. My undergraduate experience would not have been the same any place else. My experience at Lafayette is irreplaceable.”
