603 first-year students join the Lafayette family

The 603 members of the Class of 2012 were officially welcomed to campus this morning during Convocation ceremonies opening the College’s 177th academic year.

President Daniel H. Weiss and Student Government president Amanda Pisetzner ’10 delivered welcoming remarks.

Daniel Goldberg ’09, Daniella Colon ’10, Jennifer Bell ’11, and Michael Adelman ’10, student officers in Lafayette Environmental Protection and Awareness, spoke on the connections between education and the environment and the importance of getting involved in the College’s intellectual community.

Also speaking were Wendy Hill, provost and dean of the faculty; Hannah Stewart-Gambino, dean of the College; Carol Rowlands ’81, director of admissions; and John Colatch, director of religious life and College chaplain. Hill led the faculty processional and joined Weiss in announcing the matriculation of new students. Paul McCurdy ’82, Alumni Association president, presented the Class of 2012 flag to first-year students Joel Hindelang and Alexa Biale.

The new students’ “Live Green, Lafayette” orientation program goes through Sunday. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 25.
