Concert Band, Nov. 15; Orchestra, Nov. 23; Jazz Ensemble, Dec. 4; and Concert Choir, Dec. 6

Fall performances by the Music Department’s four student ensembles will be 8 p.m. Nov. 15 (Concert Band), 3 p.m. Nov. 23 (Orchestra), 8 p.m. Dec. 4 (Jazz Ensemble), and 8 p.m. Dec. 6 (Concert Choir and Chamber Singers).
All concerts are held in the Williams Center for the Arts. Free tickets can be received by calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009.

The Concert Band performance will feature five major works for band, one of which is an orchestral transcription: The Cowboys by John Williams, Original Suite by Gordon Jacob, The Lions of North Bridge by Francis McBeth, First Suite in E Flat by Gustav Holst, and Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed. The 54-piece band is Lafayette’s largest in recent history.

The Orchestra program features Antonio Salieri’s Concerto in C for Oboe, Flute and Orchestra, with soloists Nobuo Kitagawa on oboe and Susan Charlton, director of the chamber wind ensemble, on flute. Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 64, No. 4 will also be performed.

The Jazz Ensemble’s repertory ranges from swinging classics by such greats as Duke Ellington to contemporary music from such composers as Gordon Goodwin, Matt Harris, and Lennie Niehaus. The band also features original compositions and arrangements.

Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will celebrate the season and preview material from the choirs’ upcoming performance tour of Italy. Repertory highlights include classics by Giovanni Palestrina, Josquin des Prez, William Byrd, and Anton Bruckner; modern works by Eric Whitacre, Jennifer Higdon, and Arvo P�rt; traditional spirituals; and holiday favorites. Come early for a 7:30 p.m. lobby performance by the Brass Ensemble, and stay after the concert for a community carol sing in the lobby with cookies and cider.
