Team competed against 19 other schools from across the region

The Lafayette Forensics Society placed second overall at the New York University Skyline Spectacular held Nov. 15 in New York City.

Finishing behind Seton Hall University, the team competed against 19 other schools including: James Madison University, Emerson College, Cornell University, Brooklyn College, Kings College, Wilkes University, Loyola University, Ithaca College, and Ursinus College.

Rachel Heron ’09 (Downingtown, Pa.), a double major in English and geology, placed third in duo interpretation (with Ricken), third in prose interpretation, third in impromptu speaking, and fifth in individual sweepstakes. Beth Wehler ’09 (Gettysburg, Pa.), a double major in mathematics and economics & business, took second place in extemporaneous speaking and third place in persuasive speaking.

Kyle deCant ’10 (Orange, Conn.), a double major in philosophy and government & law, placed second in persuasive speaking, second in after dinner speaking, third in individual sweepstakes, third in extemporaneous speaking, and fourth in impromptu speaking. Daniel Ricken ’12 (Woodbury, N.Y.) took third in duo interpretation (with Heron), fifth in poetry interpretation, and sixth in prose interpretation.

“The NYU tournament was an incredible experience for me, probably the best one of the year. I learned so much about all of my events and gained new perspectives on how things can work,” says Ricken.

The team also won the debate competition at the novice level. Samantha Sangenito ’12 (Glen Cove, N.Y.) took first place and Ivan Dimitrov ’10 (Pavlikeni, Bulgaria), an international affairs major, placed fifth.

The Forensics Society is coached by Scott Placke, director of forensics, and John Boyer, director of debate and assistant director of forensics.
