Alumni enjoy good times at variety of regional events
Alumni chapters bring together Lafayette graduates to begin and renew friendships with one another and strengthen bonds to the College. They enjoy baseball, basketball, and hockey outings, luncheons and dinners featuring faculty or alumni speakers, museum trips, welcoming receptions for incoming students, events with President Dan Weiss, service projects, tailgates, happy hours, and many more activities. The Lafayette and Lehigh alumni chapters shared happy hour Oct. 23 at City Stream Brewery in Hartford. The chapter previously enjoyed happy hour Aug. 13 at Trumball Kitchen in Hartford, May 28 at City Stream Brewery, and June 19 at J. Timothy’s Taverne in Plainville. Martin coordinated these events.
A wine and cheese party was held Sept. 12 at Spiritus Wines in Hartford, which is owned by Gary Dunn ’88 and Jennifer Gardner Dunn ’88. Martin coordinated the event.
The chapter cheered on the Rock Cats in AA baseball action as they took on the Portland Sea Dogs on Family Day July 13 at New Britain Stadium. In addition to the game, a local dairy sponsored a kids’ giveaway, and the Rock Cats allowed children to run the bases after the game. Fletch Thomson ’98 coordinated the event.
Mark Crain, William E. Simon Professor of Political Economy, was guest speaker at a reception and dinner April 24 at The Hartford Golf Club. He spoke on “The Case for Conscription,” summarizing arguments for and against compulsory military service and presenting new evidence based on research. George Royster ’63 and Thomson coordinated the event. Staats attended.
The Central Connecticut and Westchester/Fairfield chapters watched the Bridgeport Sound Tigers take on the Hartford Wolfpack in hockey action March 30 at The Arena at Harbor Yard. The event featured a catered reception in the third-floor Tigers Den.

Roberto Noya, dean of enrollment services, visited the chapter Oct. 14 and addressed the College’s strategic plan, specifically the admissions initiatives for the D.C. metro area, and the different ways the chapter can help the recruitment effort. The chapter enjoyed happy hour Oct. 21 while learning more about the Posse Foundation and networking with professionals from the Washington, D.C., metro area.

Patriot League young alumni from the D.C. area enjoyed a boat cruise around the Nation’s Capital July 11. The group met at Sequoia Restaurant before setting out. Valliere organized the event. Twenty-eight Lafayette alumni attended.
The chapter held its Northern Virginia Leopard Luncheon June 12 at the Marco Polo Restaurant in Vienna, Va. Marcy Mistrett, director of the Washington, D.C. Posse Program, was guest speaker.
The chapter held its annual dinner April 30 at Clyde’s of Gallery Place. Alumni Association president Jamie McLaughlin ’76 provided an update and Provost Wendy Hill delivered the keynote address.
The chapter volunteered at the Capital Area Food Bank April 12 as part of Lafapalooza: Lafayette’s National Days of Service. Alumni sorted and prepared food for local distribution. Griffin coordinated the project.
Rado Pribic, Oliver Edwin Williams Professor of Languages and chair of the international affairs program, presented “Globalization at Lafayette College” at the Leopard Luncheon April 11 at Marco Polo Restaurant.

Noya addressed the College’s strategic plan, specifically the admissions initiatives for the Florida Gulf Coast, and the different ways the chapter can help the recruitment effort. Staats visited the chapter Oct. 22-24 and met with Harding, Rich Lambrecht ’65, and Dick Batts ’56 regarding the possibility of hosting alumni events in The Villages, where an increasing number of alumni now reside. Donohue arranged a dinner with several alumni in the Sarasota area and Harding organized one in the Tampa Bay area. Her visit concluded with an alumni luncheon in Odessa hosted by Turrell.
Harding and his wife, Colleen, hosted the chapter’s annual Beach Blast Aug. 16 at their home in Belleair Beach.
A baseball outing featured the Florida Devil Rays versus the Florida Marlins June 14 at Tropicana Field. Early birds visited with Rays manager Joe Maddon ’76 prior to batting practice.
The chapter attended the musical Fame May 18 at the Richey Suncoast Theater in New Port Richey. The group also met for a pre-show gathering.
The chapter organized a telecast party for the Lafayette-Lehigh basketball game Feb. 23 at The Sarasota Ale House.

More than 100 young alumni gathered for a destination happy hour at the Jersey Shore Aug. 2 at The Parker House in Sea Girt. The Office of Alumni Affairs and Young Alumni Committee of the Alumni Association sponsored the event.

The chapter joined with Princeton’s chapter to volunteer at Monmouth Battlefield State Park April 12 as part of Lafapalooza: Lafayette’s National Days of Service. Alumni reconstructed a section of split rail fence that marks a Continental Light Infantry position during the Battle of Monmouth. Following the project, Monmouth Park’s chief historian, Garry Stone, led an onsite discussion of the Marquis de Lafayette’s role at the Battle of Monmouth. Purcell coordinated the event.

The chapter teamed up with New York Cares during Lafapalooza: Lafayette’s National Days of Service April 12 to clean up a public space as part of Hands on New York Day. Jon Fields ’88 coordinated the event.

Alumni joined Lehigh and Bucknell alumni for a joint Night at the Ballpark June 30 to watch the York Revolution take on the Newark Bears at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York.
Sixteen players participated in the golf outing May 9 at Armitage Golf Club. The winning foursome was Mark Pickering, Fred Brown ’89, Rick Poplaski ’90, and Rick’s father. Mark also won both closest-to-the-pin prizes. “Campy” Campbell, who played on Baumgardner’s team, won longest drive. After golf, the group enjoyed hot wings, hot dogs, and hamburgers in the Caddy Shack Restaurant. There also was a 50-50 drawing and door prizes. Other alumni in attendance included Don Chubb ’50 and Bob Griesemer ’68. One of Griesemer’s sons won the 50-50 drawing. Players used golf balls with the Lafayette logo.

The chapter watched the Iron Pigs take on the Columbus Clippers during VIP Night May 12 at Coca-Cola Park. John Squarcia ’69 was event chair.
The chapter volunteered at the Center for Animal Health and Welfare April 12 as part of Lafapalooza: Lafayette’s National Days of Service. Volunteers organized donations in the garage, cleaned up the center’s grounds and kennels, walked dogs and brushed cats, and painted indoors.
The renovations of MacCracken Varsity Field House were featured at the annual spring tailgate, which preceded the baseball game against Bucknell and softball game against Lehigh April 5 at Metzgar Fields.
The third annual Lafayette Family Skate took place March 8 at the Steel Ice Center, Bethlehem.
Alumni enjoyed dinner at Marquis Hall March 2 and heard a firsthand report on the January interim class The Open Wall & 21st Century Europe, in which students traveled to Berlin, Munich, and Prague.
Chapter memberships for 2008-09 are available. Standard membership is $10; alumni card membership is $20 and includes discounts at various College outlets as well as area businesses. Memberships are valid through June 30, 2009. Dues payments help fund chapter events and contribute to the LALV’s annual scholarships to two Lafayette sophomores.
