Event is part of the College’s celebration of Black History Month

Africans Creating African Consciousness and Interest Abroad (ACACIA) will host its fourth annual conference from Feb. 27 to March 1 in Kirby Hall of Civil Rights room 104. This year’s theme is “Ballots or Bullets: Recent African Elections.”
The conference is taking place in conjunction with the College’s celebration of Black History Month, which includes lectures, art exhibits, films, and performances.

The opening address will be presented by Onyeka Obasi, the president and founder of Friends of Africa International Inc., at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27. Her topic is “Elections in Africa: The Commitment of Youth is Essential.”

S. Ebow Quainoo, author of Transitions and Consolidation of Democracy in Africa and editor of Africa Through Ghanaian Lenses, will discuss “Ballots or Bullets: A recent Review of Elections and Governance in Africa” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28.

The keynote address will be presented by a scholar and professor from the University of Zimbabwe. His name is being withheld due to possible political concerns in his home country. He will discuss “Democracy and Academic Freedom in Africa” at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28.

The final presentation will be “Kenyan Literature and Democracy” by ACACIA president Nganga Muchiri ’09 (Nairobi, Kenya), who is pursuing a B.S. with a major in chemical engineering and an A.B. in English. His lecture will take place at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, March 1, followed by a student panel and brunch held at 1 p.m. in Marquis Hall West Wing.
