The College will present awards and prizes to more than 100 students who attained outstanding academic success in all four of Lafayette’s academic divisions, engineering, the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
Also recognized will be 58 students who have been invited this spring to join Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa fosters and recognizes excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Outstanding students from all curricula are eligible for election as juniors or seniors.

The keynote speaker will be Laneta J. Dorflinger ’75, vice president of clinical research at Family Health International in North Carolina.

Also speaking will be President Daniel H. Weiss, Provost Wendy L. Hill, and Steven M. Nesbit, chair of the Academic Progress Committee and associate professor of mechanical engineering.

Prizes will be awarded by Katalin E. Fabian, co-chair of the Subcommittee on Honors Convocation and assistant professor of government and law; Robert I. Weiner, co-chair of the Subcommittee on Honors Convocation and Jones Professor of History; and Hannah W. Stewart-Gambino, Dean of the College.

Dorflinger directs a global clinical research program to evaluate new and existing methods of contraception and HIV prevention approaches. She has held several other leadership positions at Family Health International including vice president of research and development, director of clinical trials and director of regulatory affairs & quality assurance. Dorflinger received several noteworthy awards including the Science and Technology in Development award from USAID. She served on a number of committees including the World Health Organization’s task force on long-acting systemic methods of fertility regulation.

Dorflinger graduated from Lafayette in 1975 with a degree in chemistry. She was the recipient of the J. Hunt Wilson Prize in Analytical Chemistry in 1975. She earned a Ph.D. in physiology from Yale University and did her post-doctoral training at Harvard School of Public Health. She is an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees for 15 years.

(Note: Marquis Scholars and Trustee Scholarship recipients, selected from among Lafayette’s most promising applicants, receive a special merit-based financial award and educational benefits. In the EXCEL Scholars program, students do collaborative research with faculty while earning a stipend.)
