The choirs will perform April 25, Orchestra April 26, Percussion Ensemble April 27, Concert Band May 2, and Jazz Ensemble May 8

The music department’s five student ensembles will present their spring performances over the next two weeks. All concerts will be held in the Williams Center for the Arts and are open to the public. Free tickets can be acquired by calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009.

The performances will be: Concert Choir and Chamber Singers with Mulgrew Miller at 3 p.m. April 25, Orchestra at 5 p.m. April 26, Percussion Ensemble at 8 p.m. April 27, Concert Band at 8 p.m. May 2, and Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m. May 8.

The Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will perform 16th-century Madrigals, contemporary music by Steve Reich and Janika Vandervelde, and world premier choral compositions by Mulgrew Miller, a renowned jazz musician and Lafayette’s Alan and Wendy Pesky Artist-in-Residence. The choirs are under the direction of Jennifer Kelly, assistant professor of music.

The Orchestra program includes music by Mozart and Handel, and will feature solos by violinist Chris Jose ’11 (Stroudsburg, Pa.) and cellist Sam Friedman ’11 (Rochester, N.Y.). The orchestra is under the direction of Stephani Bell.

The Percussion Ensemble will feature tradition drum music from Japan, Indonesia, Ghana, and Mexico, and modern selections from composer Steve Reich. The ensemble is directed by Larry Stockton, professor and head of music.

The Concert Band program will include a variety of traditional and modern concert band selections from stirring marches to overtures, and from classic transcriptions of orchestral literature to original concert band repertoire. The band is directed by James Moyer, associate professor of music.

The Jazz Ensemble’s repertory ranges from classics by Duke Ellington to contemporary music from Gordon Goodwin, Matt Harris, and Lennie Niehaus. The group also performs a number of original student compositions and arrangements. The ensemble is under the direction of Ken Brader.
