Students, staff, and faculty have collected 7,130 pounds of items discarded by students moving out for the summer as part of the green move-out initiative. All items are being donated to various local organizations to minimize waste.
The items collected were canned and dried food, clothing, bedding and towels, dishes, cooking utensils, toys, Halloween costumes, mattresses, furniture, TVs, refrigerators, books, and much more. This year’s haul far exceeded last year’s estimated 5,000 pounds of items.
More than 30 volunteers collected items from designated drop-off areas established throughout the campus May 13-17, and from graduating seniors and students living in off-campus housing May 24.
Organizations receiving donations include American Family Services Foundation, SPCA of Northampton County, Safe Harbor of Easton, ProJeCt of Easton food pantry, Better World Books, and the College Hill Presbyterian Church furniture bank run by David Hogenboom, professor emeritus of physics.
The green move-out was supported by the Office of Student Affairs, the Office of Campus Sustainability, a number of Greek organizations, and Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection.
