D’Rivera will give a talk prior to his concert on the forms of Latin music that have made their way to contemporary American jazz. His talk at 7 p.m. in room 108 of the Williams Center is free and open to the public.

The final performance in the 2009-10 Jazz Masters series will be Anat Cohen, Wednesday, March 10, $18.

Cuban-born Paquito D’Rivera has garnered every major award in jazz, including the NEA Jazz Masters Award and the National Medal of Arts (both in 2005), numerous Grammies, and an astonishing series of collaborations with many of the greatest figures in music. His breakout partnerships with Dizzy Gillespie and the original “United Nations” bands in the 1980s solidified the Afro-Cuban pulse of musical spirit that continues to undergird mainstream American jazz.

This performance is supported by an NEA Jazz Masters grant administered by the Mid Atlantic Foundation for the Arts. The 2009-2010 Jazz Masters series at the Williams Center is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The 2009-2010 Performance Series at Lafayette College is supported in part by gifts from Friends of the Williams Center for the Arts; by provisions of the Josephine Chidsey Williams Endowment, the J. Mahlon and Grace Buck Fund, the Croasdale Fund, the Class of ’73 Fund, the Alan and Wendy Pesky Artist-in-Residence Program, the James Bradley Fund, and the Ed Brunswick Jazz Fund; and by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Dexter and Dorothy Baker Foundation, and New England Foundation for the Arts. Special thanks to the F.M. Kirby Foundation for its extraordinary support.
