Africans Creating African Consciousness and Interest Abroad (ACACIA) will host its annual student-focused conference “Beyond 2010: Africa Financing Africa’s Development” March 26-27.
This is the fifth year that ACACIA has held a conference on current African issues for the Lafayette community. The theme this year is the relationship between Africa, its financial markets, and its development.
The keynote address will be presented by John Morris, managing director of The Midway Group and chairman of the Fulcrum Investment Group, at 7 p.m. Friday, March 26 in room 103 of Hugel Science Center. He will discuss his personal experience trying to establish an African-based financial institution.
According to ACACIA president Nicholas Stacey ’11 (Mbabane, Swaziland), the conference is moving away from a classroom lecture format with its workshop sessions and adopting a panel discussion style to allow for more of an exchange of insights and opinions.
There will be three workshop sessions Saturday, March 27 in room 104 of Kirby Hall of Civil Rights. “Financial Markets and African Development” will be at 10 a.m., “The Financial Crisis and Policy Directions” will be at noon, and a closing session will be held at 3 p.m.
