It’s officially the start of summer here on College Hill, but not everyone has left campus. A number of student-athletes are staying in Easton for a variety of reasons, and this week GoLeopards.com caught up with cross country athlete Margaret Bruno-Metzger to find out what she’s doing this summer, her favorite vacation and more.

Talk about what you’re going to be doing on campus this summer. I’m doing Excel research with Professor Kerns, my painting professor. Basically, I’m going to be helping him create his art for an upcoming show in the Newark museum of art. He combines painting and neuroscience as well as technology to create truly unique and beautiful works. It’s very exciting because Professor Kerns is such an innovative artist and he is always teaching me new things and influencing my work.

What’s your major and what do you like about your major? I’m an Art major with my focus in Studio Art (painting). I love how I am able to express myself and am given freedom to find what I’m interested in and make it work visually.

What’s been the most unique project or class you’ve taken at Lafayette? Has to be drawing II with Professor Lukas. He started the class by assigning us to create art using nonconventional art materials. It was pretty crazy but fun.

Give readers an idea of what your summer training/conditioning program is like: Haha, it’s very intense. It starts out easy: 30-mile weeks and builds up to 70-mile weeks. Add lifting and circuits and things get crazy!

What is your earliest cross country or track memory? I started running my junior year of high school. After my first cross country race, I walked up to my coach and said “I quit.”

What can you take from your sport and incorporate into everyday life? Perseverance. No matter how hard things get, I can always overcome the obstacle. Mental toughness is a necessity in my sport.

What do you still wish to accomplish (on or off the course)? All I want to do is run my race and set all my best times this year. No matter where I place in the league or in the record books, as long as I know I ran with my heart and gave 100 percent, I’ll consider myself successful.

Most embarrassing thing that’s happened to me on the course is: First cross country race last season I collapsed with a mile to go in horrible leg convulsions. I was in the lead till that point, and therefore everyone ran by me as I waited for the cart. It was horrible.

Sport you would participate in other than your own: Swimming

Something about me that others would be surprised to hear is: I used to own sheep.

Best vacation I ever took was: To Hawaii

Best part of summer: Warm weather

Pool or beach? Beach

Favorite food at a summer BBQ? Cold pasta salad

What’s one place in the world you want to visit and why? Italy because it has good food and art.

Food you can’t live without? Peanut butter, no competition.

Favorite TV show as a kid? Scooby-Doo

Song that’s currently playing on repeat on your iPod? Your Love Is My Drug by Ke$ha
