The SFJAZZ Collective will be on campus Thursday, Oct. 14, for a lecture, workshop and an 8 p.m. performance at the Williams Center for the Arts.
Ensemble members will present a performance/lecture on the foundations of jazz composition, improvisation, and ensemble arranging at 4:15 p.m. Artistic director Miguel Zenon and pianist Ed Simon will give a pre-performance talk at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. concert are free for Lafayette students, $6 for students at LVAIC schools, $5 for faculty and staff, and $22 for the public. They can be obtained by calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009.
The SFJAZZ Collective is an all-star jazz ensemble comprised of eight of the finest performer/composers at work in jazz today. They collaborate annually in an extraordinary creative laboratory of composition, performance, and touring, under the tutelage of Randall Kline and his renowned San Francisco Jazz Festival. Each SFJAZZ tour features original compositions and arrangements by the members, while also paying tribute to a major figure in jazz—the 2010 tour honors Horace Silver.
The 2010 touring ensemble is comprised of Zenon, Simon, saxophonist Mark Turner, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, trombonist Luis Bonilla, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, drummer Eric Harland, and bassist Matt Penman.
Other performances in the 2010-11 Jazz Masters series will be the Saxophone Summit, Feb. 6, $22 and the Kenny Werner Quintet with special guests David Sanchez and Randy Brecker, March 8, $20.
