Men’s and Women’s Soccer Honored for Academics by National Coaches Association

The men’s and women’s soccer teams have been honored with Team Academic Awards by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA).

The men earned special recognition from the NSCAA, as the team’s collective grade-point average (GPA) of 3.38 ranked among the 10 best in Division I.  The team was also the only Patriot League program to crack the men’s top 10.

Earlier this season, Luke Calvano ’12 (Eastampton, N.J.) was selected to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, as voted upon by the League’s men’s soccer sports information directors. Calvano boasts a 3.71 GPA as a policy studies and economics & business double major.

The men’s current roster has combined for 16 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections, not including the 2010 list that is still to be determined. Head Coach Dennis Bohn has mentored 97 honor roll selections during his decade on College Hill.

The women had a cumulative GPA of 3.39 last academic year with 18 student-athletes named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The team was led by 4.0 GPAs from Stephanie Bereday ’11 (Irvington, N.Y.), a mechanical engineering major, and Caitlin Kennedy ’11 (Havertown, Pa.), an economics and business major.

Lauren Smedley ’13 (Hamilton, N.J.) was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year and also earned All-Patriot League First-Team honors along with Avery Jackson ’14 (Wyckoff, N.J.), who was named to the All-League Second Team.

Smedley collected three career Goalkeeper of the Week honors, including two this past season. The sophomore boasted a 0.83 goals-against average with 113 saves. She ranked second in the Patriot League in goals-against average, save percentage (.876), saves per game (6.41), and shutouts (8).

Her .876 save percentage is the second best in school history for a single season and her eight shutouts are a single-season record, while her 12 career shutouts are also a program best.
