Through the use of period instruments and techniques, students in the Marquis Consort are introduced to the music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods as it would have been originally performed. Under the direction of Jorge Torres, associate professor of music, the early music ensemble uses historical instruments such as crumhorns, flutes, guitars, lutes, and recorders. Many of the works from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries are very rare and in some instances are being played by students for the first time in hundreds of years. Membership in the Marquis Consort is open to any student.
