Janka Lovering '13
Two Lafayette students have received Gilman Scholarships to support their semester abroad experiences this spring. Janka Lovering ’13 (Exeter, N.H.) will study in New Zealand, and Beatriz De Jesus ’12 (Woodside, N.Y.) will study in India, Senegal, and Argentina.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants to undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. The program offers scholarships for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad, and aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia.
Lovering, a civil engineering major, will be studying abroad in New Zealand through Frontiers Abroad. For the first five weeks, she will be in a field camp with students, professors, the indigenous Maori people, and other locals. After the field camp, she will study at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch where she will begin research on some facet of the field camp, and take courses in civil engineering, science, and math.

After Lafayette, Lovering would like to attend graduate school and is interested in renewable or alternative energy as well as sustainable practices.
“I’m sure that studying in New Zealand will help solidify my path one way or another since they are pioneers in geothermal, hydro, and other renewable energy sources,” she says.
De Jesus, a government and law major, will be traveling to New Delhi, India; Dakar, Senegal; and Buenos Aires, Argentina. She will be taking courses in urban politics and development, culture and society of world cities, urban planning and sustainable environments, and contemporary urban issues.
“This experience will help me pursue my passion for civil rights and give me a better perspective on the world,” she says.
On campus, Lovering is co-president of Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection, and is a member of the special interest floor TREEhouse, the Green Building Club, club field hockey, and the outdoors club.
De Jesus is a Posse Scholar, and was president of the Hispanic Society of Lafayette last year. She was also on the committee for Youth Empowerment Day, has been secretary for the Heritage of Latin America interest floor for the past two years, and participated in Literacy Day. Last summer, she did a corporate law internship with The Travelers Companies, Inc. She also did an internship at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and an externship at Smith Abbot, LLP.
