A still image from the video "Whether" by Mary Magsamen

Video artist Mary Magsamen will be on campus April 4-5 to meet with students and faculty and present a public lecture on her work and creative process.

Magsamen will be the first visiting artist in the College’s new Third Street Artist-In-Residence program. Throughout her stay she will visit art classes and hold a critique session for upper level students. Her talk will be 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in room 108 of the Williams Center for the Arts.

Magsamen’s art often addresses issues related to language, identity, media, and family in the context of a distinctly American cultural system.  Her conceptual and metaphoric work is beautifully detailed and profoundly executed, although at times, unexpected and shocking.

The Third Street Artist-In-Residence program will offer opportunities for artists working specifically in photography and film to interact with students, faculty, and the community through courses, critiques, exhibitions, and public lectures.  Each semester, two to three artists will be invited to campus either as a visiting artist, with a two-day visit, or an artist-in-residence, with a one-two week residency.

The program is based in the Williams Visual Arts Building, which serves as the anchor for the $10-million Williams Arts Campus-the new headquarters for the College’s theater and film & media studies programs. The residency program is made possible by the generous support of Amy Smith and the AKS Foundation.
