Laura Hammer '12 in New York City
For anthropology and sociology major Laura Hammer ’12, the ways that societies function, down to even their fashions, have always been of great interest.
“Studying anthropology and sociology has given me great insight in the structure of society. It has given me different perspectives, further igniting my fascination with other cultures. Learning about the ideas and principles behind social interaction is truly beneficial – not just in an academic environment, but social as well,” says Hammer (New York, N.Y.).
Hammer has spent the summer furthering her knowledge of fashion as an intern at Harper’s Bazaar magazine in New York City. “My internship has been a really great experience: it has not just been professionally significant, but personally beneficial, as it has truly increased my knowledge of the fashion industry,” she explains.
Through her internship, Hammer has also learned about the ways that magazines function.
“From my internship, I have learned the intricacies of how a magazine publication is run on a day-to-day basis,” says Hammer. “In turn, I have also become well versed in the inner-workings of the fashion closet. I’m responsible for the inventory of incoming and outgoing samples, as well as support staff in assigned projects. I assist the editors in preparation for photo shoots, conduct trend research, and generally maintain the organization of the closet.”
Fashion is just one of the things that Hammer is passionate about. She is also drawn to language and travel. “Since studying abroad in Paris this past spring, my passion for both of these things has only intensified. I hope that after graduation I can travel more and continue to use my French skills gained while abroad,” says Hammer.
Hammer is involved with numerous activities on campus. She serves as a transfer mentor, responsible for welcoming and providing a positive atmosphere for incoming students. She is also a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and the executive co-chair of the marketing committee for Lafayette Activities Forum.
“I believe my fashion internship is a great launching pad as I begin my job search this upcoming year,” she says. “I’ve learned a lot about the fashion industry, really gaining an insider’s perspective on the tricks of the trade. My internship has increased my determination to become established in fashion.”
