As part of the Art of Urban Environments Festival in Easton, College Theater is presenting two performances of the internationally acclaimed Bread and Puppet Theater Friday, Oct. 14 on The Quad and Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Farmers’ Market in Centre Square, Easton.
Seven Vermont puppeteers and musicians will collaborate with members of the Lafayette and Easton communities to stage outdoor performances of their most recent production, Man = Carrot Circus. Both performances are at noon and admission is free and open to the public.
Man = Carrot Circus is based on the revelation that upright man rooted in dirt was created in the image of the upright carrot rooted in dirt. Performers will enact the issues of the day, not only in how they affect carrots, but how they affect us all. Some of the circus acts may be politically puzzling to adults, but usually an accompanying kid can explain them.
The Bread and Puppet performances are made possible in part through funding from Lafayette’s Mellon Foundation Grant for Environmental Studies.
Since its beginnings in the 1960s, Bread and Puppet has been committed to involving community members in its productions. Accordingly, anyone of any age interested in being part of the performances should sign up Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in room 120 of Pardee Hall or email Michael C. O’Neill, associate professor of English and director of theater. Although the performers need not have any theater experience, they will need to attend a rehearsal with Bread and Puppet on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 4-6 p.m. and appear in both the Friday and Saturday performances.
This is the second time Lafayette has hosted Bread and Puppet.
