Students in the Single Motherhood course held a Halloween costume party in the Marlo Room for the families they work with from the Easton community.

Taught by Debbie Byrd, associate professor of English, the course allows students to interact regularly with pregnant and parenting teens at Easton Area High School and with single mothers residing at shelters for homeless families.  As they learn about the challenges faced by these single mothers, Lafayette students are inspired to find ways to support women they come to regard as both knowledgeable and inspirational.

For example, Byrd’s students have created health resource manuals and childcare directories designed to be especially useful to Easton’s low-income families, produced a film in which teen moms share their experiences and dreams, and created pamphlets that explain how to apply for WIC, Title XX childcare subsidies, and college admission and financial aid. Thanks in part to Lafayette students, all 13 of the single moms they worked with during the 2009-10 school year graduated from high school, and eight are currently enrolled in college.
