After working as a civil engineering project manager for Maser Consulting for 10 years, Anthony Fasano ’00 began to recognize aspects of the industry that seemed detrimental to young engineers’ professional development.

“Some companies support career development, but many still do not and so younger engineers feel ‘lost’ early on in their careers,” says Fasano, of Ridgewood, N.J. “The long hours and tight deadlines, which are just the nature of the industry, have an unhealthy effect on social and family lives. Also, people are so focused on their jobs that they often forget about their career and personal growth.”

When asked to give presentations on career development to the staff at Masur, Fasano recognized how much he enjoyed the process, particularly when he started seeing individuals take positive steps in their careers. Named the 2005 Young Engineer of the Year by New York State Society of Professional Engineers, Rockland County Chapter, he had experienced strong success early in his own career.

“I realized that I had an ability to inspire and motivate engineers, to help them move forward,” says Fasano, who completed a one-year program at Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching to become a certified professional coach.

In 2010, Fasano founded Powerful Purpose Associates, a full-service professional coaching, training, and consulting firm dedicated to helping engineering professionals and organizations improve teamwork and communications.

A civil engineering graduate, Fasano holds a master’s in civil engineering from Columbia University. He recently published Engineer Your Own Success: 7 Key Elements to Creating an Extraordinary Engineering Career.

A guest speaker at engineering organization events nationwide, Fasano also provides a blog on his company website where readers may sign up to receive career advancement tips through “A Daily Boost from Your Professional Partner” emails.

Fasano is acting president of National Society of Professional Engineers, Rockland (N.Y.) Chapter. In 2010, he received a presidential citation from New York State Society of Professional Engineers for his dedication to both the society as well as the engineering community.
