Jason Marshalek ’13
Civil engineering major Jason Marshalek ’13 (Montoursville, Pa.) discusses academics and the importance of staying focused on the football field.
What do you enjoy about your major?
I would have to say getting to see the ins and outs of the infrastructure that helps make this country run.
One class/professor that every Lafayette student should try to take is…:
Every engineer should try to take any class with Steve Kurtz (associate professor of civil and environmental engineering).
What was your most unique academic experience (class/project/internship) at Lafayette?
Structural Analysis & Steel Design; it was really interesting to take part in a competition against other students to develop the best small-scale model of a bridge.
Do you have any post-graduation plans?
I don’t have any official plans yet, but I hope to secure a job with a civil engineering firm.
What is the most important thing the team has to do to be successful this year?
Have a constant effort and focus that is uncommon and not allow any distractions to get in the way of our goals.
What leadership roles have you adopted as a senior on the defensive line?
I’ve been trying to help the underclassmen understand the defense, rather than allowing them to focus on what their role is on a certain play. By understanding the defense, they will know what adjustments the offense is going to make to our blitzes, and it will put them in a better position to succeed.
Do you have any superstitions or pregame rituals?
I usually listen to some country music in the hours leading up to the game to keep myself calm and then switch up to some rock an hour before the game.
What is your favorite sport other than football?
Basketball
What television show have you seen every episode of?
How I Met Your Mother
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Sweden; I would love to go hiking in the mountains and enjoy the scenery.
